Champ Car World Series Round Eight - San Jose - 31 July 2005 Ryan Hunter-Reay was unable to complete the first running of the San Jose Champ Car race yesterday due to a mechanical failure; the punishing new track claiming half of the Champ Car field as its victims during the race. Contact during the warm-up session bent the right front suspension of his Lola necessitating some quick work from the pit crew to repair his car in time for the race. Unfortunately for Hunter-Reay there was more trouble ahead as before he could take the green flag his engine cut out so he had to get bump started to get into the race. By lap 18 he was doing well and up to 12th position but as he headed along the straight his suspension broke, sending him back to the pits for repairs. Ironically he managed to then complete another 18 laps before a mechanical failure ended his race for good, leaving the American classified in 14th position. "The guys did a fantastic job of getting the car ready to race after this morning's practice," commented Hunter-Reay after the race. "Unfortunately, problems before the race forced us to take the green flag from the rear. I set a good pace and passed a car and picked up a few positions then the suspension failed going over the tracks. We fixed the car in the pits and went out to pick up a few more positions by attrition but the same problem we had at the beginning of the race ended our day early." Ryan Hunter-Reay will be back on track in Denver in two weeks' time. SAN JOSE RESULTS: 1. Sebastien Bourdais (Newman/Haas Racing) 1:45:42.899 2. Paul Tracy (Forsythe Championship Racing) +3.724 3.
