Graham Taylor: Sporting Director / Chief Racing Engineer
My experience with Ryan was in his rookie Champ Car season, initially as his race engineer and subsequently as the Team’s Manager. From an engineering perspective I found Ryan to be technically astute and accurate. Ryan’s feedback correlated well with the cars data to the extent our set-ups were frequently adopted by his more experienced ex-Champion teammate. There is absolutely no doubt as to Ryan’s commitment on the circuit, I can honestly say I have never met a braver driver, and it is my observation that when the pressure is extreme Ryan performs at his best. As Team Manager I encountered other dynamics to Ryan’s character including that he was always most accommodating to late changes of plans from both the engineering and public relations/marketing staff and that he was hugely popular within the team.
As a Race Engineer I have worked with many world class drivers: Mika Hakkinen, Juan Pablo Montoya, Rickard Rydell, Allan McNish, Gil de Ferran, Frank Biela, Emanuelle Pirro, etc. and I found the same level of commitment, ability, technical feedback, and concentration in Ryan as these high level drivers.
David Brown: Team Manager / Technical Director Krohn Racing
In a relatively uncompetitive car (Reynard compared to a majority of Lola’s) Ryan managed to post the races fastest lap in Mexico City, by over half a second and repeatedly in the latter stages of a grueling race. This was due to his determination and ability to extract the maximum from the car as well as his technical feedback in developing a fast race setup. The final race of the season, Australia, (qualified as the top Reynard) was a fine testament to his driving skills and concentration as his level headed approach resulted in victory, after a late race duel with his Champion teammate, which saw many much more experienced drivers fall foul of the dry to full wet changing conditions. In competing against Ryan over the last two seasons I have always been impressed by Ryan’s ability to extract the maximum from his car’s performance and his ability to maintain a positive attitude. Ryan is always a driver to be reckoned with in a racing situation, and while he is a tough competitor he does so with a refreshing openness and willingness to give every effort towards success.

I have followed Ryan's career very closely since his days in Karting and then had the pleasure of running him in my own CART team in 2003. There is no doubt in my mind that Ryan is not only one of the biggest natural talents in America, but in the world. He is one of very few drivers I have ever come across that have the great combination of effortless speed with the right amount of aggression. When the opportunity is presented to him he always transforms it into a race win and never crumbles under pressure, as he has shown on every occasion in his career. He is a dream for any sponsor with his good looks and well balanced demeanour. If I had the opportunity again I would be delighted to have Ryan in one of my cars. *Additional References Provided Upon Request |
